Week 4 : CLA Practicum

Today we are half way through week four of our CLA Practicum. Forgotten what our CLA Practicum is? No problem, click here for a description. Quickly put, it is a chance to practice the culture and language learning techniques that we learned earlier this semester. For the past three weeks we have been comprehending nouns and verbs. This week we shift gears a bit and start on grammar. During this morning's session we used little people from some board games to acquire personal pronouns such as I, you, he, she, we, etc. It has been a busy, stretching time but we know that we are learning many valuable lessons. This weekend Debra and I are both speaking at our Church. Deb will be speaking at a ladies luncheon on Saturday and mine is during the morning service on Sunday. We are learning a lot but are looking forward to our green Christmas in California where we can rest our brains :o)

CLA Practicum Begins

What is our practicum? Well, we'll be putting into practice all that we've been learning so far in the realm of language and culture acquisition. For the next six weeks we will spend two hours a day with a Russian lady named Lydia. During our session we will use techniques we have studied to learn her culture and language. We will then spend 6 hours filing what have learned and also practicing and preparing for the next days lesson. It's a very intensive program, by the end of the first 3 weeks we will have around 475 words / phrases comprehended! The method we have been learning is very different than the traditional memorization technique, and its also much more effective! Though we will learn a lot of Russian language and culture, that isn't the goal. The goal is to practice and use the techniques we have been studying in class. We look forward to sharing over the next six weeks how we are doing.

Moving On...

Jungle Camp is over! Check out our blog for many pictures and videos. Debra and I completed missions institute and so are now employees of New Tribes Mission of Canada. This means that we are now members of the mission and are tax-deductible. This August we will start our last year of training, language institute. We will post more details later about our coming year of training. ~ Norm

PTC is Over, Jungle Camp Begins

Today was our last day of PTC (practical training class) and on Monday we start building Jungle Camp. We are mostly prepared, this weekend we hope to tie up any loose ends we have so that we will be ready to work. From what we've heard, a good goal for the first day is to get your main posts in and your roof on. Sounds like a lot of work, but a lot of fun as well! We also had a meeting today about the men's hike which takes place a week and a half from now. We will be hiking 37 kms up the Bruce Peninsula. Keep us in your prayers as we build our Jungle Camp home!

The Training Goes On...

This past Friday saw us sitting in our last day of normal classes for this semester. We still have Tech Tips and Jungle Camp, but I'm sure that those will go fast enough. After Debra and I graduated from NTBI in 2003 we took two years off before continuing on with the training so at times it feels as if we've always been in the training! As far as in class goes, we only have the language course remaining and will complete that in May 2007, I know that time will fly and that date will be here before we know it.

We have only one more week of classes before we begin Tech Tips. This module focuses on current technology available and is applied to missionaries living in a remote setting. It is a hands-on course with lots of lab work and practical information that we will one day need to know and apply. After that we have a week of all day work detail and then Jungle Camp beings! Our History

Norm was born and raised in Ontario and through the witness of his mom and sunday school he became a Christian at a young age. Throughout high school God used various people and events to urge him to go on a short term mission trip. Norm resisted this urging for a few years but finally gave in and went to Brazil on a trip with Destination Summit. That was a trip that would ultimately change his life as God used it to light a passion in his heart. The next year he graduated high school then went right out to Mongolia for a summer. Almost immediately after that trip Norm went off to New Tribes Bible Institute, a school suggested by Merran Arnold, a friend now serving with New Tribes Mission in Brazil.

Debra was born and raised in California, USA and exposed to God and missions right from the start. She too accepted Jesus as her Saviour at a young age. Debra's dad serves on the mission board at their church and her grandparents served in the Philippines. Both of her parents and her aunt & uncle went to NTBI, so naturally Debra spent most of her life looking forward to her 2 years at NTBI. Debra also went on a short term trip to Russia with a group from her church. New Tribes Bible Institute is where Norm & Debra met. Though they barely spoke to each other for the first year, God was working in them and preparing them for each other. Norm & Deb learned so much through the amazing teaching there about God's desire and plan for mankind. At the start of the second year, Norm decided to apply for a six month associate term with New Tribes Mission of Canada in Papua New Guinea, but not long after this did Norm and Debra's lives start to merge. Through a chance meeting involving Debra's pet turtles (long story) they started to spend more and more time with each other and both saw in the other the characteristics of someone that they could spend their lives with. God taught them so much during this time and in April of 2003 Norm asked Debra's dad, Charlie Rutledge, for permission to marry Debra. Charlie approved but asked that they give it more time. What could from a human perspective seem like a setback was actually God's perfect plan for them.

Norm and Debra graduated from NTBI in May 2003 and Norm immediately left for Papua New Guinea to serve as an associate. Though the seperation was hard, God graced Norm with a visit by Debra as she studied at the Interface campus where he was serving. While Debra was studying there, Charlie emailed Norm and gave him the go-ahead to propose to Debra! Fortunately Norm just happened to have the ring on hand and on July 27th, 2003 (also Debra's 19th birthday) Norm proposed to Debra at the Bird of Paradise Resort in Goroka, Papua New Guinea.

Norm completed his time in New Guinea and went home to help Debra with wedding plans. April 3, 2004 was picked as the date and after a few more months of separation they were wed in Fillmore, California! After a honeymoon cruise they settled in a beautiful house outside Orangeville, Ontario to take a bit of time off before continuing the training with New Tribes Mission. In Fall 2005 they moved to Durham, Ontario to continue training with NTM So Where are They Now?

Current Needs

It's awesome to see God provide in many different ways. People often ask if there is something that they can specifically provide for us. On this page we will list needs as they arise. These are things that are a necessity either for living here at NTMC or for our training / ministry.

Jungle Camp Needs: In June of this year we will be participating in Jungle Camp. Jungle Camp is a program designed to train us how to handle tough living conditions and also how to build good relationships with co-workers. We will use poles, plastic, twine and duct tape to build a house out in the forest and live in it for a month. We have to carry up all our supplies - we can't leave at all during that month. We were recently given a list of tools that will be necessary for the jungle camp program:

Olympus WS-320M A digital voice recorder is a requirement for the language program training with New Tribes Mission. This is the recorder that is recommended by our instructors. We won't need it until next fall but it is something we are praying about and we are looking forward to seeing how God provides. UPDATE: click here to see how God provided!

As missionaries with NTM we are 100% supported by churches, friends and family. We do not receive a salary or any other kind of financial aid. We are currently in training with New Tribes Mission at the training centre in Durham, Ontario, Canada. It is a two year intensive program where we learn about cross cultural church planting skills and also the language skills we will need to accomplish this. Our classes run from 8am to noon and for the afternoon have what is called 'Practical Training Class'. This works out to work detail, but is a great way to learn practical skills that may be needed later on the field. During this time we are not able to work and rely on support from those who have been led by the Lord to support us in this ministry. Future Plans

After graduating NTMC in June 2007 we hope to spend some time in California with Debra's family and friends. While in Canada Debra has been able to build some great relationships but we would like to have Debra's church family get to know Norm as well. The Lord has laid it on our hearts to be support missionaries in Guinea, West Africa. Missionaries in the tribe cannot function with out countless people helping them with a huge amount of tasks. The ministry that we're both very excited about is the guest house ministry in the capital city of Conakry. This ministry assists missionaries in the tribe so that they can spend more time teaching God's word and bringing tribal groups into the family of God. Much of this is long term and just ideas that have excited us, but of course we are open to the Lord's leading and are excited to see what He does with these plans, no matter what it is.

What We'll Be Studying

The Program

NTMC’s specialized training program is designed to prepare missionaries to face challenges of cross-cultural ministry. Two years of Bible training precede acceptance to our training program. The program consists of the Missions Course followed by the Culture and Language Acquisition Course (CLA). Some student will study the Linguistics course as well.

Missions Institute Course Descriptions

Semester One

Orientation and Big Picture (14 hours) (top) An introduction to campus life at the Mission’s Training Institute is given along with an overview of tribal evangelism and church planting so that the student can know what lies ahead and how the different parts relate to the whole.

Foundations for Living (100 hours) (top) In this course the student starts off with a study of the character of God as the foundation for all right relationships. A detailed study of Satan, origin of mankind being self-focused, and the believer’s position in Christ are critical aspects of this course. The student is taught what it means to live in the Spirit thus having a vibrant relationship with God day by day.

Animism (18 hours) (top) This world tribal religious belief system is studied in detail. The student begins to realize how radically different tribal societies think and act.

Church Planting Essentials (15 hours) (top) In this module, the student will be covering nine specific essentials of tribal church planting. We will not attempt to cover any of these topics in detail. In this module, we will talk a lot more about the “why” than the “what” and the “how.” The “what” and “how” of these topics will be more thoroughly covered in other modules.

Time Management (4 hours) (top) This course helps the student to understand and practice the importance of managing their time. How to identify life priorities and establish goals are critical parts of the missionary task

Pre-Field Contact and Field Arrival and Orientation (8 hours) (top) A variety of topics are discussed in this module as it relates to the new missionary before leaving for the field. Field expectations and orientation are also discussed in a practical way.

Cross Culture Communication (18 hours) (top) This course introduces the student to cultural differences in communication, and to potential problem areas that need to be addressed in order to communicate properly. It focuses on the importance of learning the target culture and language as a prerequisite for an effective ministry with a specific group of people.

Culture Investigation (15 hours) (top) A specific culture (Yurok) is studied in detail and the student must learn to record information according to the Universal Culture Outline. We also study the cultural similarities and contrasts between target culture and biblical teaching.

Pre-Evangelism (14 hours) (top) In this module we look at issues like bonding, paternalism, and building solid relationships with the target people before formal Bible teaching begins.

Relationship to Co-Workers (10 hours) (top) This is a critical course of study where we study the dynamics of team members working together in a ministry setting. The course focuses on the attitudes, characteristics, and qualities that must be present in order to have a positive relationship among team members.

Work Detail (225 hours) (top) This daily afternoon class is all about work and relationships. The students learn many practical skills needed on the mission field. Not only is the student sharing in the responsibility of keeping the training facility in good condition but also he/she can learn some new skills that are good equipping tools for future ministry.

Personal Discipleship (15 hours) (top) The student will spend a least one hour a week in the home of a designated Mission’s Institute (MI) staff couple. The purpose of this time is for both student and staff to get to know each other in a relaxed way. Things that relate to MI course study or the student’s life in general can be talked about during this time.

Semester Two

Foundations for Living Continued (80 hours) (top) This course starts out with the students doing a review of 1^st semester course material. The remainder of the course focuses on topics such as ministry realities, critical attitudes, and Biblical relationship principles applied in the context of family and co-worker relationships

Chronological Teaching Explained and Applied in North America (30 hours) (top) Teaching God’s Word foundationally is carefully explained and then the student is taught how to do this in a North American context. Cultural barriers are studied so as to better understand why the Biblical message is often rejected or not rightly understood.

Chronological Teaching Applied to Tribal Church Planting (50 hours) (top) Culture, language, and Biblical issues are thoroughly discussed and taught in this module. Starting with evangelism and moving through establishment of the tribal church the student gets to see what is involved in taking God’s word into another culture. New Testament Church Principles and critical doctrines will be studied as the teaching unfolds for the tribal church.

Partnership Development (16 hours) (top) The student in this class learns what is involved in keeping good communication with his/her supporting base. This is a “hands on” class whereby the students can begin to apply right away what they are learning.

Technical Tips (30 hours) (top) This module focuses on current technology available and is applied to missionaries living in a remote setting. It is a hands-on course with lots of lab work and practical information that the student will one day need to know and apply.

Jungle Camp (6 week program) (top) With two weeks of building and four weeks of living in the bush the students learn first hand what it is like to build their own temporary dwelling and then to prepare their food and other supplies for one month of isolated living in the bush. Many practical and spiritual lessons are learned through this intense, fun, and relationship building experience.

Language Institute Course Descriptions

Culture and Language Acquisition I

Phonetics I (169 hours) and II (8 hours) (top) The course presents the basic concepts of articulatory phonetics by describing points of articulation, manners, of articulation and the speech apparatus. Besides learning phonetic theory, the student will also practice hearing, producing and writing various phonetic sounds using APA (Americanist Phonetics Alphabet).

Language Learning Techniques (70 hours) (top) This course provides techniques for learning an unwritten language, building on the skills taught in the phonetics course. Students apply newly taught language-learning techniques in a live language setting. They receive hands-on training in gathering, investigating, and filing language data, with an emphasis on the early stages of the process, yet an overview of the whole. Students also investigate various aspects of grammar and are responsible to maintain a file of their data.

Culture Learning Techniques (37 hours) (top) This course presents techniques for observing, recording, and filing cultural data, using the Universal Culture Outline as a framework. Along with lectures and small classroom instruction, the course provides a foreign culture setting for the students to practice the techniques as they learn them. Students are taught how to form cultural conclusions about what they have investigated. They are also required to consider how their conclusions might affect a chronological Bible teaching program, especially from the perspective of the receptor culture’s worldview.

International Health and Wellness (24 hours) (top) This course prepares missionaries in health, wellness, and prevention of disease. Attendees will also gain an understanding of typical diseases encountered on an international level as well as appropriate treatments. A primary focus will be given throughout the program on how to appropriately communicate this knowledge and skills cross-culturally in order to empower communities to improve their own health.

Pre-Field Orientation (21 hours) (top) This course is designed in three different sections Survival Kit, Pre-field research and National Language and culture. The purpose of the Pre-field Orientation course is to bring all students to an understanding of and an appreciation for the value of time and effort spent in learning a national language, appreciating and adjusting to a national culture, and developing relationships with nationals.

Culture and Language Acquisition II Phonemics (15 hours) (top) The purpose of this course is to give the students a basic understanding of how an alphabet is created. We want them to understand why phonetic symbols are not useful as an alphabet. And we want them to understand some of the processes and reasoning that are behind the changes made in moving from the original phonetics to the practical orthography. This should allow them to function comfortably within a tribal or national alphabet. (It is not the goal of our course to produce fully trained personnel, ready to create an alphabet for a previously unwritten language.)

Grammar (55 hours) (top) The purpose for this course is for the students to become familiar with a basic set of grammatical forms and meanings that exist in languages worldwide and to the terminology that is used to describe them. This is done so that:

(a) They will be able to take better advantage of, and understand easier, the language learning helps that are available to them, such as written material and consultants.

(b) They will be able to use the more basic grammar points of the language as one of several “road maps” to plan and record their progress through the language learning experience.

(c) They will be able to overcome the problem of “language shock”- expecting a second language to act like the students native tongue.

(d) The students will have a tool that will speed up their language learning and provide help in a specific problem areas

(e) And finally, so that they will have a good understanding of the relationship between “form” and “meaning” as an aid in any type of translation work.

- During the Applied Language Learning segment of the course they will build several of their language learning activities around different areas of the grammar of the language they are learning. Phonetics Review (5 hours) (top) The purpose of this course is to give the students a review of the basics of phonetics- listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There is no new material during this time.

Field Methods (19 hours) (top) The Purpose of this course is to prepare the students for the procedural aspects of their six week practicum. Some language learning theory is also presented during this time. Both large group lectures and demonstrations (with all the CLA II students) as well as small group practice (with just 10 or so students to one instructor) are used during this time. The course runs 2 hours per day for six days before Applied CLA. Also, there are four more mornings of instruction spread out during the Applied CLA.

Applied Culture and Language Learning (82 hours) (top) The purpose for this practicum is:

(a) To learn basic techniques of language and culture acquisition through practice in a real language learning situation.

(b) To learn a method of language and culture acquisition- that is to be able to put all the techniques together and to plan one’s own direction- to be able to set both short and long term goals.

Some secondary values within this context are:

(a) To make the practicum as real as possible- to learn from a native speaker of the language, and to do what a person would really do during the first five to six weeks on the field in both language and culture.

(b) To allow, if possible, the student to work in the national language of the country he or she is planning on ministering in- when this happens it significantly affects the students motivation.

- This practicum lasts six weeks. During this time the students about two hours per day with a speaker of the language they are learning. Beyond that they spend about one to three hours a day in review, one to three hours a day in record keeping and planning, and some time in building a relationship with their helper and in language exposure time. (The opportunity for exposure time is limited in our present context.) During the students language helper sessions the majority of the time is spent interacting in that language, not just gathering data to be studied and memorized later. In a sense, the language helper session becomes our exposure time.

Church Planting (18 hours) (top) The church planting course consists of lectures, discussions, small groups and personal assignments. The first part of church planting prepares CLA II students to conduct church planting related surveys with their language helper during live culture and language. The second part prepares students to consider church planting issues with focus on the church planter.

Literacy (18 hours) (top) The purpose of the literacy course is to introduce all NTLI students to literacy as it relates to NTM ministry: its definition, importance, and the process of producing and teaching a literacy course to tribal people. Students completing literacy will be able to explain the significance of literacy (both reading and writing) in planting a church. They will be able to identify various methods for producing primers and teaching literacy. They will be able, with consultation, to produce primers and conduct a literacy program.

Bible Translation Fundamentals (24 hours) (top) Bible translation fundamentals are taught by discussing meaning based translation principles and procedure, NTM translation guidelines, and by practicing these in translation exercises.

About New Tribes Mission

Vision:

Millions of tribal men, women and children are still isolated from the Gospel.

Someone must go tell them about God's gift of salvation. Someone needs to live among them, love them with Jesus' love, learn their culture and language, and then teach the people in their own language about the Savior.

NTM coordinates missionaries, sent by local churches, to take the Gospel to tribal people. Missionaries then plant churches. They disciple believers, translate the Scriptures, and train teachers and leaders, who in turn reach out to their own people and to neighboring tribes.

Purpose: NTM helps local churches plant tribal churches. We mobilize, equip and coordinate missionaries, who come from and are sent out by local churches. Working through NTM, these missionaries evangelize people groups who have had no access to the Gospel, translate the Scriptures into their language, and plant a church.

And that's what our chairman, Oli Jacobsen, calls "a beautiful cycle." Once that church is established, it is a local church that we can partner with in taking the Gospel to others who have yet to hear.
